Disability Documentation
Greetings!
I have been in TRiO for many years and I have heard several ways students can prove they have a documented disability. What is the best answer? Can students provide their own documentation or must they go through Accessibility Services?

Students must provide documentation of a disability from a qualified professional; however, they are not required to go through Accessibility Services specifically. Acceptable documentation may include medical or psychological records, IEPs or 504 Plans, or verification from a licensed professional. While Accessibility Services is often a reliable and preferred source of documentation, TRIO programs may accept documentation provided directly by the student as long as it meets the requirement of being from a qualified professional. Self-declaration alone is not sufficient. But please note that unless your project is a Disability SSS, you do not have to serve any disabled students - they can be just low-income and first- generation or one or the other and not disabled if they are not able to provide you with the documentation of a disability.
